The Process:
A) Anesthesia.
Depending on the required depth, laser peeling treatment may be performed using topical anesthetic (a special lotion applied on the treated area to numb it). In this case, a waiting period is required prior to the actual procedure, so that the anesthetic would work. For deeper peeling treatments, the treated area will be injected with local anesthetics. Only in rare, complicated cases the use of general anesthesia would be considered.
B) Preparation
The skin is cleansed and sterilized and then slathered with a uniquel gel based substance to facilitate the movement of the device over the skin surface and improve the overall conductivity of the laser beams.
C) The actual procedure
The surgeon passes a wand-like device over the treated areas, and the laser emits a beam of light which vaporizes the top layers of the damaged skin with maximal precision.
D) Cooling
Some surgeons apply cooling preparation to the skin. The goal is to decrease swelling and possible discomfort.
E) Protection
A protective barrier is applied to the skin: mostly healing ointments and sunscreens. Severe cases may require the use of bandages, silicone dressing and etc.
