When our cousin started searching for a natural treatment for eczema she found many options. At first she did not realize she had eczema, otherwise known as Atopic Dermatitis. For years she lived with the itchy, red, scaling skins spots, and often felt like she was shedding like a lizard. We were nice and never called her lizard face, although as kids the other children were not as kind.
The first misconception of eczema is that most people think it is contagious. No, it is not. It is simply an inflammation of the skin that often produces red or scaling skin eruptions, and the worst part of eczema is the itching, which can be severe. The common causes of eczema are allergies to food, genetics, environmental allergies, pet dander, dust mites, pollen, and allergic reactions to chemicals in soaps and detergents.
One example is when we changed laundry soap a while back, and within days afterwards found ourselves breaking out with a case of eczema. It was subtle at first, just an itch, which we passed off as a reaction to the weeds we pulled while working in the garden. Then the itching got worse and we broke out with rough splotches. It took a bit before we realize the problem and sought natural treatment for eczema.
We ditched the detergent and opted for a diet treatment. Diet is one of the most important steps in curing eczema. There are a couple of foods that are known to cause allergic reaction: dairy products, processed and canned foods, coffee and sweets are the most common ones. We stopped eating junk-food and went on a healthy organic diet that consists mostly on fruits and vegetables (except citrus fruits, which are highly acidic and may worsen the condition).
Our cousin on the other hand found that using coconuts worked as a natural treatment for eczema. Use coconut oil, not Pina Coladas as she noted, although she loves the drink too. She said the coconut oil smelled great and also helped to smooth her skin. When we were children our parents bought of these pretty wool sweaters for us to wear to Sunday school. Sure, we looked precious in our little pink sweaters, but they also made us itch and resulted in eczema. I wished our parents would have used coconut oil instead of the paste of licorice, which I still cannot stand the smell of today.
Another natural treatment for eczema are creams that include the extract of witch hazel as well as chamomile. Of the 3 natural treatments for eczema, our top choices are drinking tomato juice twice a day and taking walks in the sun. Our cousin suggests applying coconut oil to the affected area to help relieve eczema. And you can also apply creams made from the extract of witch hazel or chamomile, which are also great natural treatment for eczema.
It is always wise to consult a doctor when treating any medical condition. Moderation when testing a natural treatment for eczema is also advised. Too much of a good thing can be harmful in some cases.
